      Learn more about Zellige Tiles

      What Are Zellige Tiles?

Authentic zellige is a handmade Moroccan tile. Artisans shape it by hand from raw clay near Fez, glaze it in a single solid color, and fire it in traditional kilns. No two pieces come out the same. Slight waves in the surface, tiny pinholes, and shifts in glaze depth are the signature of the process, not a flaw.

What we carry in this collection is zellige-lookย tile: porcelain and ceramic pieces engineered to reproduce that same rippled glaze and shade movement in a consistent, easier-to-install format. You get the glossy, light-catching surface and the handmade read without sourcing individually hand-cut clay piece by piece. It's a different category from encaustic cement tile, which is unglazed and pattern-printed through the body rather than glazed on top, and from Talavera or majolica tile, which is hand-painted with graphic designs instead of finished in one solid glaze.

For the wider design tradition zellige comes from, seeย Handmade Look tiles, which covers the broader mix of Moroccan, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian styles zellige sits inside.

      Zellige Floor and Wall Tile

Most of this collection is wall tile. Ceramic and glazed ceramic zellige-look pieces are non-vitreous, meaning they absorb more moisture, so they're built for dry and wet walls like aย backsplashย orย showerย wall, not for underfoot.

The porcelain-bodied pieces in the collection are a different story. With water absorption under 0.5%, they're dense enough forย floor tileย and outdoor wall use, including a small run rated forย poolย waterlines. Check the water absorption spec on each product page before you assume a piece can go on the floor.

Format-wise, expect small squares in 4x4 and 5x5, elongated rectangles that read likeย subway tileย in 2x6, 2x8, 3x10, and 3x11, plus a few linear 2x16 pieces and matching trim for finished edges. Glossy is the dominant finish across the line. A smaller matte range gives the same wavy silhouette a quieter, less reflective read. Keep grout joints narrow, around 1/16" to 1/8", so the lines disappear and the glaze's natural waviness reads as the pattern instead of the grout.

      Zellige Tile by Room

Kitchen backsplash:ย Run a glossy zellige-look tile from the countertop to the underside of your upper cabinets for the classic light-catching look. A single color in a simple offset keeps the rippled glaze doing the work. Busy chevron or herringbone layouts fight it instead. Browse our full range ofย kitchenย tile for pairings.

Bathroom and shower walls:ย On a vanity wall, a ceramic zellige-look tile in a soft neutral holds up well on its own. On shower walls, confirm you've picked one of the porcelain or glazed pieces rated for wet walls, and keep it off the shower floor. Ourย bathroomย tile guide covers the rest of the room.

Fireplace surrounds and accent walls:ย A deeper color like green or blue reads as a real focal point on aย fireplaceย surround or a single accent wall, where the tile doesn't have to share visual space with cabinetry or fixtures on either side.

      How to Choose Zellige Tile

Match the material to the surface first.ย Ceramic and glazed ceramic zellige-look tile stay on walls. Porcelain pieces with water absorption under 0.5% can handle floors, outdoor walls, and even pool waterlines. Check the product spec before you buy, not after.

Expect real shade variation.ย Most of this collection carries a V2 or V3 shade-variation rating, meaning noticeable color and tone shifts from tile to tile. That's the point. It's what makes the finish read as handmade instead of printed. Order a little extra so you have enough range to blend across a full wall.

Pick glossy for depth, matte for restraint.ย Glossy zellige-look tile reflects light and gives a wall real depth and movement, especially under pendant or vanity lighting. Matte holds the same wavy surface but reads calmer, which suits a room that already has a lot going on.

Use trim pieces to finish exposed edges.ย Zellige-look tile is thin and glazed on the face, so a cut edge looks unfinished. Matching trim pieces close out backsplash tops and outside corners cleanly.

Order a sample before you commit to a color.ย Glaze color shifts under different light. Bring a sample home, look at it in daylight and again under your kitchen or bathroom lights, and hold it against the cabinets, counters, or paint it'll actually sit next to.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Zellige is a handmade glazed tile with a centuries-old North African tradition, and each tile has slight variation in shape, thickness, and glaze color, giving installations a distinctive, artisanal texture that machine-made tile can't replicate.

Yes, because zellige tiles vary slightly in size and thickness, installation typically requires more grout and a skilled installer experienced with handmade tile to manage the natural irregularity.

Yes, once sealed and properly installed, zellige performs well in backsplashes and showers, though its handmade nature means it should be treated with a bit more care than mass-produced porcelain.

The variation is intentional and part of the material's character. Traditional zellige is hand-glazed and kiln-fired individually, so subtle shifts in tone are expected and add to its organic appeal.
