      Your Guide to Hexagon Tiles

Hexagon tiles are six-sided geometric tiles that form a continuous honeycomb pattern across floors and walls. The shape adds visual structure to a surface through geometry alone, without needing pattern or texture in the glaze to make an impact.

The format covers a wide size range, from 1-inch mosaic sheets to 12-inch individual tiles, and comes in porcelain, ceramic, marble, terracotta, and glass. You will also see it referred to as hex tile, hexagonal tile, or honeycomb tile. All three names describe the same six-sided shape.

Hex tile pairs well with other small-format geometric shapes. Penny round mosaics share a similar scale range and are often used on the same bathroom floor, one format as the field tile and the other as a border.

      Hexagon Floor and Wall Tile

Hexagon tile works on both floors and walls, with different material and finish considerations for each surface.

Floor applications: Porcelain tiles are the most practical choice for hex floors. Porcelain is dense, water-resistant, and available in matte finishes that provide grip on wet surfaces without sealing. Ceramic tiles work well in lower-traffic floors like powder rooms and bedroom entryways. Marble tiles and terracotta hex tiles bring warmth and natural surface variation, but both materials are porous and require a penetrating sealer before grouting. Small-format hex tiles on mesh backing are part of Tile Mart's hexagon mosaic tile collection, which covers the classic 1-inch and 2-inch sizes.

Wall and backsplash applications: Glazed porcelain and ceramic are the practical choices for backsplashes and shower walls. Natural stone hex tiles on shower walls need sealing more frequently than on floors because grout joints on a vertical surface are harder to keep dry between uses.

      Hexagon Tile by Room

Bathrooms: The bathroom floor is the most common application for hex tile. Small hex tiles (1-inch to 2-inch) are the traditional choice because the dense network of grout joints provides natural slip resistance on a wet surface. Black-and-white hex is a classic colorway here: white tiles with gray or charcoal grout for a high-contrast, graphic look, or white tiles with white grout for a softer, more textural finish. Large hex tiles (6-inch and up) suit wider bathrooms where the tile scale matches the room's square footage. In a small bathroom, large-format hex can feel oversized.

Showers: For shower floors, small-format hex tile is a strong choice because each grout joint creates a slight ridge that improves traction on a wet surface. Use a waterproof grout rated for continuous wet exposure and keep joints at 1/16-inch to 1/8-inch to prevent water from pooling in wider channels.

Kitchen backsplashes: On a backsplash, hex tile works as an accent rather than a field tile. A section of marble hex or colored ceramic hex draws attention to the cooking zone and creates a graphic contrast against flat cabinet faces. The six-sided shape looks structured and deliberate even in a single neutral color.

Entryways: Large hexagon tiles in gray, white, or warm beige work well in entry floors. The geometry adds visual interest without needing a second color or border detail to finish the space.

      How to Choose Hexagon Tile

Size sets the tone. Small hex tiles (1-inch to 2-inch) create a dense, closely detailed surface that holds proportion well in compact spaces like bathrooms and shower floors. Large hex tiles (6-inch to 12-inch) have fewer grout joints and feel more architectural at the scale of a kitchen or larger room. In a room under 50 square feet, small-format usually balances the space better. In larger rooms, small-format hex can look busy.

Match the finish to the application. Matte and lightly textured hex tiles are the right choice for any wet floor: shower floors, bathroom floors, entryways. Glossy hex tiles suit walls and dry backsplashes, where the light reflection adds depth and the surface is easy to wipe clean. On wet floors, a glossy finish offers less grip and shows water spots more readily.

Grout color changes the pattern. Dark grout on a light hex tile makes every joint visible and brings the geometry forward. White or tone-on-tone grout softens the joints and lets the tile surface do more of the visual work. The same white hex tile with charcoal grout versus white grout produces two distinctly different finished results, so settle on the grout color before ordering.

Seal porous materials before grouting. Marble, terracotta, and natural stone hex tiles are porous enough to absorb grout pigment into the tile face if you skip this step. Apply a penetrating stone sealer 24 hours before grouting, let it fully cure, and wipe off any surface residue before mixing grout. Porcelain and glazed ceramic do not require sealing.

Plan for more perimeter cuts. The hexagon shape means border tiles at the edge of any installation are angled cuts, not straight ones. A rectangular room does not align neatly with a hex grid, so you will cut more tile at the edges than you would with square or rectangular formats. Order 10 to 15 percent extra material to account for cut waste, especially on bathroom floors with multiple fixtures to work around.

Hexagon tiles have an inherent geometric logic that makes them remarkably adaptable across design styles and applications. Their six-sided form creates a natural tessellation that reads as both organic and architectural, depending on the material and color chosen. In classic black and white, they evoke timeless vintage charm. In large format concrete-look porcelain, they feel decidedly contemporary. In handmade ceramics with glaze variation, they lean bohemian and artisanal. This stylistic range is genuinely unusual for a single tile format. Tile Mart carries hexagon tiles across multiple sizes, materials, and finishes, making it easy to find the right version for your specific design direction and application.

Hexagon tiles come in a wide range of sizes, and scale matters significantly in how they read within a space. Small-format hexagons, typically one to two inches, are ideal for shower floors, bathroom floors, and detailed feature surfaces where their intricate tessellation pattern creates visual richness up close. Medium formats around four to six inches work well on bathroom and kitchen floors, striking a balance between pattern presence and practical installation. Larger hexagons, from eight inches upward, suit open-plan floors and feature walls where a bolder geometric statement is the goal without the visual busyness of smaller formats. Our sample program at Tile Mart helps you assess scale in your actual space before committing.

Grout color is arguably more consequential with hexagon tiles than with most other formats because the tile's geometric shape means grout lines form a highly visible, continuous pattern across the entire surface. A closely matched grout color creates a subtle, tone-on-tone effect where the hexagon shape registers quietly rather than assertively. A contrasting grout, such as dark charcoal against white tile, makes the geometric pattern bold and graphic, which can be a striking design statement in the right context. There is no universally correct answer; it depends entirely on how prominent you want the pattern to read. We recommend testing grout samples alongside your chosen tile before making a final decision.
