What Is Zellige Classique Tile?
Zellige Classique is authentic Moroccan zellige, hand shaped and hand cut from natural terracotta clay, then hand glazed and fired by artisans, not a porcelain or ceramic tile made to look like zellige. It comes in seven colors, Al Hamra (terracotta red), Sahara Rose (dusty pink), Mint Tea (soft green), Atlas White, Gris Perle (pearl grey), Blue City (peacock blue), and Lambswool (cream), across 2x6 and 4x4 field tile, plus seven mesh-mounted mosaic patterns built from those same colors.
Zellige Classique Wall Tile
This is wall tile, not floor tile. Every format, field and mosaic alike, is rated for walls only, not for shower pans, pool linings, or frost resistance. Fireplace surrounds are the one rated exception, when proper installation methods are followed.
The 2x6 field tile runs notably thicker at 1.5cm (15mm) than the 4x4 field tile and the mosaic sheets, which both come in at 3/8". All formats carry the same glossy, hand-cut character: heavy (V3) shade variation, slight waviness, and the occasional pinhole that are part of genuine zellige rather than a defect.
Zellige Classique Tile by Room
Kitchen backsplash: A field color in a classic offset gives a kitchen backsplash the rippling, light-catching glaze that only hand-cut zellige produces.
Bathroom vanity or shower wall: Use a single color on a bathroom vanity wall, or run it up shower walls, never the shower floor, where this material isn't rated.
Fireplace surround: Espresso-toned colors like Al Hamra or Gris Perle wrap a fireplace surround with warmth and texture.
Accent wall: The mosaic patterns, Star & Cross, Tapis, Chouari, Papillon, Starburst, Art, and Triangle, work best as a contained accent wall or niche rather than wall-to-wall coverage, where the intricate geometry can stand out.
How to Choose Zellige Classique Tile
Keep this material on walls, never floors or shower pans. None of the formats, including the mosaics, are rated for shower pans, pool linings, or frost resistance.
Mix tiles from multiple boxes before installing. The handmade process means real shade variation from carton to carton, and the vendor recommends blending boxes to get a natural, even-looking result.
Order at least 15% overage. Industry standard for hand-cut zellige accounts for cuts, breakage, and future repairs, since no two batches match exactly.
Choose a mosaic pattern for a focal point, a field color for full coverage. Patterns like Triangle or Star & Cross read best in a contained space; the solid terracotta field colors work better across a full wall.
Order a sample before you commit. Genuine zellige carries pinholes, gentle waves, and shade shifts that photos can't fully convey, see a piece in your own light first.
